During the International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease, Lori Daiello, Pharm.D., presented a study that was done on effects of Omega-3 supplementation and Alzeimer’s disease. This study included 819 participants in the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative. According to the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative website, the mission of the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) is to define the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease. A major goal of the ADNI study has been to collect and validate data such as MRI and PET images, cerebral spinal fluid, and blood biomarkers as predictors of the disease. Data from Alzheimer’s Disease patients, Mild Cognitive Impairment subjects, and elderly controls are available to download from this site.
This study contacted periodic brain magnetic resonance imaging and memory testing on older adults with normal cognitive function, mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease, over a 3 year period. Dr. Daiello compared data collected from the 819 participants. 117 of these participant’s reported that they regularly take fish oil supplements. The remaining 702 participants did not take any fish oil supplements. The participants were both men and women.
The study found greater brain volume and better cognitive function on the group that regularly took Omega-3 supplments! “In other words, fish oil use was associated with less brain shrinkage,” Dr. Daiello stated!
